200-Hour vs 300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training: Which One Do You Need?
If you’re weighing up your first yoga teacher training or wondering whether to go further after your 200-hour, this comparison is for you. We checked pricing, prerequisites, specializations and Yoga Alliance registration at 14 Registered Yoga Schools on 4 November 2026, and pulled in Yoga Alliance’s own standards and a handful of independent yoga education sources to fill in the rules around both levels.
What follows is a straight, numbers-first look at 200-hour vs 300-hour yoga teacher training: what each one actually is, what schools charge, what’s required before you can enrol, and what a 300-hour training does and doesn’t change about your teaching life.
We run a training ourselves
YMB Yoga School runs both 200-hour and 300-hour trainings in Klungkung, Bali. Because of that, we’ve left YMB’s prices out of every market average in this article and shown them separately so you can compare like for like.
The short answer
Across 14 Yoga Alliance schools, 200-hour tuition averaged US$2,683 (range US$950–US$3,650) and 300-hour tuition averaged US$3,853 (range US$1,100–US$5,510). At the schools that sell both, a 300-hour costs about US$1,160 more than their own 200-hour. If you’ve never trained before, the 200-hour is the one to book first — every 300-hour program in our dataset requires it.
Should you choose a 200-hour or 300-hour YTT?
The short answer: if you’ve never taught, start at 200 hours. A 300-hour only makes sense once that foundation is in place.
A 200-hour training teaches you to plan and lead a class safely from nothing. A 300-hour training assumes you can already do that and spends its hours going deeper into one or two areas — anatomy, therapeutics, a specific style, or advanced sequencing. Trying to skip straight to 300 hours isn’t an option at any school in our dataset, and it wouldn’t give you the basics you’d need anyway.
- Never taught before: start with a 200-hour training. It’s the credential studios ask for and the one every 300-hour program requires first.
- Already hold RYT-200 and want more depth: a 300-hour lets you specialise in anatomy, therapeutics, a particular style or advanced sequencing.
- Want RYT-500: you need both — a completed 200-hour plus a 300-hour, from the same school or different ones.
What’s the actual difference between 200-hour and 300-hour training?
A 200-hour is the foundational, entry-level certification; a 300-hour is advanced study built on top of it, not a replacement for it. One independent yoga education source puts it simply: the 200-hour introduces technique, anatomy, philosophy and teaching methods, while the 300-hour deepens whatever a graduate already learned, typically in a specialised area.
| Criteria | 200-hour | 300-hour |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Foundational, entry-level certification | Advanced, specialised study |
| Prerequisite | None (open to beginners) | Completed 200-hour required |
| Leads to | RYT-200 | RYT-500 (combined with RYT-200) |
| Typical focus | Techniques, anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology | One or two specialisations: therapeutics, advanced asana, specific style |
| Yoga Alliance syllabus | Four-category "elevated" core curriculum | Older five-category syllabus (Techniques, Teaching Methodology, Anatomy, Philosophy, Practicum) |
Curriculum structure per Yoga Alliance’s published standards.
If you’re also wondering whether something shorter could work instead, it’s worth reading is 100-hour training enough to teach? first — a 100-hour course does not lead to RYT registration and isn’t a teaching qualification on its own.
How much does a 200-hour YTT cost and what’s included?

A 200-hour training costs US$2,683 on average across the 7 schools in our dataset that stated a price, with a full range of US$950 to US$3,650. The middle half of schools charge between US$2,100 and US$3,490, so a course well outside that band is worth a second look at what it includes.
What the cheapest advertised price includes varies a lot and changes the comparison completely. At schools where the lowest price is tuition only, the 200-hour averages US$3,045; at the one school where the lowest price already bundles a shared room and meals, it’s US$950. In other words, a "cheap" headline price might just mean accommodation and food are billed separately.
| Price tier | Average | What’s typically included |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (under US$2,000) | US$1,475 | Shared room + meals at one school, other inclusions unstated at another |
| Mid-range (US$2,000–US$3,499) | US$2,893 | Tuition only at all three schools in this band |
| Premium (US$3,500+) | US$3,575 | Tuition only or unstated extras |
Based on 7 of 14 schools that published a 200-hour price.
An independent review of online-only 200-hour programs found a much lower band — roughly US$300 to US$1,200, with premium online courses around US$2,750 — which tracks with the general rule that in-person, in-country trainings with room and board cost more than fully remote study. For a broader look specifically at Bali pricing, see our 16-school Bali YTT cost review.
At six of the schools that publish both a "lowest advertised price" and a 200-hour price, the two numbers matched exactly — zero markup between the headline price and the actual course fee.
How much does a 300-hour YTT cost?
A 300-hour training costs US$3,853 on average across the 3 schools in our dataset that stated a price, ranging from US$1,100 to US$5,510. At the sites that publish both levels, the 300-hour runs about US$1,160 more than their own 200-hour, with the middle half of that gap sitting between US$725 and US$1,665.
| Location | Price |
|---|---|
| Rishikesh | US$1,100 |
| Koh Samui | US$5,510 |
Only 3 of 14 schools in our dataset publish a 300-hour price; two locations shown where price and location are both stated.

Separately, a 2026 price review by another Bali school listed a 300-hour at US$4,600 in a triple share, US$5,050 in a double and US$5,725 in a deluxe private room, and a Costa Rica program at US$4,490 to US$4,890 depending on room type. Online-only 300-hour courses can be far cheaper — one review found options from US$400 to US$2,500 — but a fully remote advanced course won’t give you the same hands-on practicum hours as an in-person one.
YMB’s 300-hour training starts at US$2,400 early bird in a shared room (regular US$3,450), which sits below the US$3,853 market average and includes 27 nights’ accommodation, three daily meals and a one-way airport transfer.
Do you need your 200-hour from the same school?
No, in almost every case. 11 of the 14 schools we checked explicitly say their 300-hour accepts a 200-hour certificate from anywhere, as long as it’s a legitimate program.
- 11 of 14 schools: state no same-school requirement — bring your 200-hour certificate from any recognised program.
- 1 of 14 schools: requires its own 200-hour as a prerequisite for its 300-hour.
- 2 of 14 schools: don’t state a policy either way, so ask directly before booking.
What every school agrees on, and what’s confirmed independently, is that you cannot take a 300-hour without having completed a 200-hour first. There’s no dataset example of a school waiving that requirement entirely.
What do 300-hour specializations actually cover?
Advanced asana and sequencing are the most common 300-hour specialisations in our dataset, but the options spread across a wide range of focus areas. A 300-hour is where schools differentiate themselves, so the specialisation on offer matters more here than at 200-hour level.
| Specialization | Schools offering |
|---|---|
| Advanced Asana | 2 |
| Advanced Sequencing | 1 |
| Advanced adjustments | 1 |
| Therapeutic Yoga | 1 |
| Advanced Anatomy | 1 |
| Yin Yoga | 1 |
| Philosophy | 1 |
| Trauma Informed Yoga | 1 |
Some schools list multiple specialisations; 5 of 14 schools don’t publish specializations at all.
That last point matters for comparison shopping: 5 of the 14 schools don’t publish what their 300-hour actually covers. If a school’s website doesn’t say what you’ll specialise in, ask before you commit, since "300-hour" alone tells you the hour count, not the content.
What is YMB Yoga School’s 200-hour and 300-hour path?
YMB Yoga School runs both levels from its campus in Klungkung, east Bali — not Ubud, and independent from any similarly-named school there. Our 200-hour is a 21-day foundation course leading to a certificate and eligibility for RYT-200. Our 300-hour is a 28-day advanced course for graduates who already hold a 200-hour, and the two together can lead to RYT-500.

Does a 300-hour training actually lead to RYT-500?
Yes, but only in combination with your 200-hour and some teaching experience. A 300-hour on its own doesn’t register you as anything with Yoga Alliance — it’s the pairing of RYT-200 plus 300 additional hours that qualifies you to apply.
- Complete RYT-200: finish a 200-hour training and register as an RYT-200 with Yoga Alliance.
- Complete a 300-hour: finish an advanced 300-hour program, from the same school or a different one.
- Apply as RYT-500: submit both certificates to Yoga Alliance to upgrade your registration.
Upgrade fee
Yoga Alliance charges a one-time US$50 fee to upgrade an RYT-200 to RYT-500, on top of its standard annual membership dues.
RYT-500 holders can go on to lead their own teacher trainings and offer continuing education to other teachers — something RYT-200 alone doesn’t permit. For a deeper look at what comes after your 300-hour, see exploring 500-hour yoga teacher training. If you’d rather start the first step now, YMB’s 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training is the foundation every 300-hour and RYT-500 path builds on.
Does Yoga Alliance registration matter for either level?
Yes, but it guarantees a structure, not a teaching style. 11 of the 14 schools in our dataset are Yoga Alliance registered at both levels; 2 openly state they are not, and Yoga Alliance registration remains optional to run a training at all, though most prospective teachers ask for it when choosing a course.
| Rule | RYS 200 | RYS 300 |
|---|---|---|
| Lead trainer hours | At least 150 of 200 hours taught by E-RYT 500 Lead Trainers | Lead Trainers teach between 135 and 300 hours |
| Anatomy taught by lead trainer | Yes, within the 150-hour minimum | No minimum — zero contact hours required |
| Syllabus structure | Four-category "elevated" core (Techniques, Anatomy, Yoga Humanities, Professional Essentials) | Older five-category syllabus (Techniques, Teaching Methodology, Anatomy, Philosophy, Practicum) |
| Minimum synchronous hours (online) | 30 hours | 45 hours |
Per Yoga Alliance’s published Registered Yoga School standards.
Registration doesn’t disappear with newer credential formats — Yoga Alliance has confirmed the 200-hour, 300-hour and 500-hour designations for schools are staying, with updates aimed at helping students and employers understand what a given credential covers, not removing the levels themselves.
Does a 300-hour training change your income?

Not automatically, and not quickly. A 300-hour deepens your skills and can open doors at higher-end studios, but it doesn’t change the basic economics of teaching yoga as a profession.
Most teachers aren’t full-time
The 2016 Yoga in America study found that 67% of yoga teachers led classes for fewer than 10 hours a week, and only 29% considered teaching their primary source of income. A 300-hour credential sits on top of that reality — it doesn’t override it.
Most new teachers start earning within a few months of finishing a 200-hour, typically through studio substitute slots, small group classes and private clients. Building a sustainable full-time income from teaching generally takes one to three years, and a 500-hour-level credential (200 + 300 hours) can open more doors at higher-end studios and retreats, without being a guarantee of either. For more context on what teachers typically earn and how, see our yoga instructor salary guide.

Common questions about 200-hour vs 300-hour YTT
A few specific questions come up often enough that they’re worth answering directly, beyond what’s already covered above.
The International Association of Yoga Therapists treats a 200-hour as an admissions requirement for its 800-hour yoga therapy programs, not as hours counted toward that total — so a 200-hour and a 300-hour don’t automatically "stack" toward every advanced credential outside Yoga Alliance’s own system. And while RYT-200 has no teaching requirement attached to it at all, meaning you can hold the credential without ever having taught a stranger, studios in practice still treat 200 hours as the minimum entry ticket when hiring.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip the 200-hour and go straight to a 300-hour training?
No. Every school in our dataset, and Yoga Alliance’s own credential structure, requires a completed 200-hour before you can enrol in a 300-hour program. There’s no exception for prior informal experience.
Is a 300-hour training longer than a 200-hour?
Typically yes. In our dataset, the one school that stated 300-hour duration ran it over 5 weeks, compared with 3 weeks for the schools that stated 200-hour duration — though course length varies enough between schools that it’s worth checking the specific dates rather than assuming.
Do I need a visa extension for a longer training?
Likely yes in Indonesia. The standard Indonesian visa on arrival covers 30 days, and most 300-hour programs run longer than that, so plan for an extension if you’re training in Bali for 300 hours. A 200-hour at 21 days typically fits inside the standard visa window.
Does RYT-200 require any teaching experience?
No. There’s no teaching requirement listed for RYT-200 registration, so it’s possible to hold the credential without having taught a class to anyone outside the training. That said, most studios still expect to see it, or something equivalent, before they’ll hire.
Is Yoga Alliance registration required to teach?
No, it’s optional, but it functions as the industry’s most recognised shorthand. Most studios ask for the RYT designation starting at 200 hours when hiring, so skipping registration can narrow your options even if it isn’t a legal requirement to teach.
How we researched this guide
- What we checked: 14 schools (a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School (RYS) offering both 200-hour and 300-hour YTTs), one per website. We found them through Google searches for this topic and in the comparison and directory pages that rank for it.
- Where the numbers come from: each school’s own website (the main page plus up to two pages on prices, dates or FAQs), read on 4 November 2026. A value was only kept if the exact words appear on the page; 19 values that could not be confirmed were thrown out.
- Which price: the regular price for the next intake. Early-bird and limited-time discounts were left out where both were shown.
- Averages: simple averages of each school’s price for that option. “Most cost between” is the middle half of prices (25th to 75th percentile); ranges show the lowest and highest. Every figure was calculated in code, not estimated.
- Currency: converted to US dollars at open.er-api.com rates of Wed, 04 Nov 2026 (1 USD = 18,140 IDR, 1 EUR = 1.119 USD, 1 GBP = 1.342 USD).
- Our own school is left out of every average and shown separately, with prices read live from our course pages.
- Limits: prices change, room types differ, and not every school publishes every detail, so “not stated” counts are shown. This is a sample of the schools we could verify, not every one that exists.
- Official figures (visa, levies, registration) come from yogaalliance.org.
